I have been taking a class about librarianship in Second Life. Second life seems to be the ultimate in social networking. After creating an avatar, one can find groups that have your same interests, can visit other countries, one can interact safely with strangers, visit libraries, take classes, see art exhibits--only ones imagination can limit you.
